A natural. Who is the Big Man and the President in A Bend in The River? 'A Bend in The River' is a 1979 historical novel written by Nobel Laureate Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, set in an unnamed town in Africa at a bend in the great river, after independence. He held the typically conservative pessimism about human nature and possibility. “Africa was my home,” Salim observes, “had been the home of my family for centuries. I really really was. . I don't normally select books from the political genre, but Naipaul is such a good writer I'll eventually read all his works. The story is absorbing, tracing the fortunes of a young Indian (but born in Africa) shopkeeper in a country which Naipaul does not actually name. Perhaps, that's because beneath the veneer of the human persona there lies a heart of darkness. Then there were gunshots. Salim is a Hindu from an Indian trading family on the East coast of Africa.

But in the new world I felt that ground move below me. Zaire, formerly the Belgian Congo and the setting for Joseph Conrad’s great anti-imperial novella, Heart of Darkness, based on Conrad’s own experiences there as riverboat captain, had overthrown its colonial rule but remained, in Naipaul’s bitter assessment, one of the “dark places on earth.” As Naipaul writes in “A New King for the Congo,” “To Joseph Conrad, Stanleyville—in 1890 the Stanley Falls station—was the heart of darkness. I don't drive that much - and I've had to use much of my driving time for more pressing items.

The essence of the book is: what is this man doing here?” Naipaul’s answer to that question would be shaped not just by his field observations but by two essays Naipaul produced based on his Congo experience, “A New King for the Congo: Mobutu and the Nihilism of Africa” and “Conrad’s Darkness,” republished in the essay collection The Return of Eva Perón (1980). The book ends with Salim escaping the attack. Naipaul's story of an Indian man, Salim, who lives in post-colonial Africa and observes turbulent changes in his country.
